A Red China Cabinet

Can you believe it’s February already!  When I think of February I think  of red.  So today I thought I would show you what I finished and it’s red.  About a month ago, Charlie and I found this china cabinet for my daughter-in-law at the Habitat for Humanity Restore.

She wanted something like this china cabinet to go into her country kitchen. And she wanted it painted red but not a bright red.   So I painted it red just like she wanted and it’s in her kitchen now.

I used Annie Sloan chalk paint.

024

I first painted the whole piece with graphite and then primer red.  After it dried, I sprayed water here and there and wiped it down to show signs of  wear.  Next, I applied both clear and dark wax.  I really like spraying with water versus sanding.  It’s not messy at all!  I learned something else too, the wax is hard to get off glass.  Make sure you tape around glass before applying the wax….I learned the hard way!

Charlie and I delivered it to their house yesterday.  I think it looks really nice in their kitchen.  Now we just need to accessorize it.  I’ll  take pictures once we’re done and post them.

Up next, this replica of an antique wooden ice box.

033

It’s been in our family for about 25 years.   It belonged to my parents and now our son and daughter-in-law have it in their kitchen.  She wants me to re-do it for her so I may sand it down and re-stain it.  What do you think?

As always, thanks for your visit and enjoy this spring like weather we’re having….at least here anyway.

Gail

  2. Every day I am amazed at what someone does with an old piece of furniture that a few weeks ago I wouldn't of looked twice at. Now of course I'm eying up everything I see!!! I like the red, very vintage looking. Never heard of the spraying with water trick, you just squirt it on and wipe it huh?

The oak ice box..... when I think of old ice boxes I think of white, or like the one you have pictured in wood. Maybe you can come up with a way to combine the two?

  9. We're enjoying Spring like weather as well.
That is a gorgeous china cabinet now that you have redone it. The red is so perfect for it. You and me, we would make quite the team, I can't stay up with you! The icebox would look lovely stained a walnut, or stain the top and paint the rest of it a light color. Whatever you do, it will be glamorous!!!
I love your dil's style, very nice!
    Hugs, Cindy

  11. I have one of those ice boxes in our pantry and love it. Iw hope you stain yours rather than painting it. I think that will keep it real. I'm your neighbor at the Shabby Cottage party.

  14. The hutch is wonderful...looks so professionally painted. Wish I could do that. We have a very old oak icebox much like yours. It actually belonged to an African American woman that lived behind my husband's grandparents' house and is over 100 years old. Although I love painted furniture, I do hope you don't paint the icebox. I think the oak is so pretty and is the original way it was purchased. I love ours and hope it will continue to stay in the family for many generations to come.

  22. Oh wowie, did you make this piece look gorgeous! I have only finished one larger piece and I'm not sure I have the hang of the wax process. I sanded before I waxed, Some people have said to wax, then sand.... My stockist, who is a friend, said to mix mineral spirits to the dark wax for the best effect. I guess I need to try another piece to see! thanks for signing up to follow on the linky follower. hugs, Sue

  33. This is beautiful. I'm in the market for one, too. A bit bigger, though. You did a beautiful job. When you said red, I kept scrolling down, and thought "where's the red hutch?" Then went back to reading and so surprised it was this one. It's beautiful! Can't wait to see what you do with the family piece!

    Blessings for a wonderful Sunday!

  35. These pieces are beautiful. I've heard of a lot of people using was on their pieces, but have no idea what type of was or where to find it. What type or brand of wax do you use. I would like to try this technique. Also, how dry is the paint before you spray it with water? Thanks so much for your help.

  37. Gail I just love what you did to this china cabinet. I have an old dark pine colonial china cabinet that I wanted to make a dark red. Yours is the exact color I had in mind. Did you use all of Annie Sloan products on this. The graphite, red and the two waxes. Do I need to sand the finish off my cabinet first or just get any build up of wax that is on it. Thanks
